Survival Guide for the 4th Trimester

If you’re reading this, a huge Congratulations, to you, new Mum! You’ve just started on one of life’s most rewarding journeys. But with the excitement of welcoming a new one, the first 3 months postpartum can also be very challenging. From sleepless nights to navigating feeding schedules and your new schedule as a family, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and that’s OK. Use this simple guide as your survival list for your first 3 months as a new Mum.

Prioritise Self Care

As a new Mum, it’s easy to put your needs on the back burner. However, self-care is crucial for your mental and physical well-being and helps you to care for you baby too. Finding small pockets of time for activities that recharge you, whether it’s a hot bath, a quick nap, enjoying a cup of tea or a catch up with a friend, is key. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from friends and family. Whether it’s assistance with household chores or watching the baby while you take a break. Having a support system in place can make all the difference.

New parenthood is a time when life can feel overwhelming but you can do it

Establishing your new rhythm

While newborns are known for their unpredictable sleep and feeding schedules, establishing a rhythm can provide a sense of stability for both you and your baby. Aim for consistent nap times and bedtime routines to help regulate your little one’s internal clock, but if that doesn’t work for you let them sleep in the pram when you’re out and about. Do what’s best for you and your family. Keep track of your baby’s feeding and sleeping patterns using a mobile app. This can help you remember sleeping and eating patterns.

Support in the first 3 months postpartum

Hire Help! A postpartum Doula might be your winning ticket. And/Or Join a new Mums’ group, online community or a Mums and Bubs fitness group can be incredibly beneficial during the first few months postpartum. Connecting with other Mums who are going through similar experiences can help to make you feel supported and connected. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you’re struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety.

Embracing imperfection forever!

Motherhood is messy, chaotic, and beautiful all at once.It’s the hardest and most rewarding job in the world. It’s okay if things don’t go according to plan or if you make mistakes along the way. Give yourself permission to be imperfect and trust that you’re doing the best you can for your baby.

Remember to celebrate the small wins, whether it’s your baby’s first smile or them falling asleep on their own. These moments may seem fleeting, but they’re the ones that make the journey worthwhile.

The first three months of your post-partum journey may be challenging, but they’re also filled with moments of excitement and love.

By prioritising self-care, establishing a routine, seeking support, and embracing imperfection, you can enjoy and explore the new life that you called motherhood. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey.

Avoid the temptation to load the dishwasher or vacuum the house while your baby naps. These things can be done later (or by someone else). Prioritise recharging you!
