Top 5 Pram Walks in Hobart
With summer upon us there is no better time to get outdoors with bub to soak up some fresh air and vitamin D!  With good coffee stops and playgrounds along the way, pram walks make for a great family outing or a social occasion with friends.
Hobart boasts many pram-friendly options that also cater well for bikes or scooters for older siblings who need to burn off some steam.  I haven't forgotten those of us with fur babies either!

1. Clarence Foreshore Trail

With many entry and exit points, the Clarence Foreshore track has multiple options for short or longer walks depending on your needs. Entry and exit points:
  • Geilston Bay to Lindisfarne (3.5 km)
  • Lindisfarne to Montagu Bay (2.6 km)
  • Montagu Bay to Kangaroo Bay (3.3 km)
  • Kangaroo Bay to Bellerive Beach (2.0 km)
  • Bellerive Beach to Howrah (3.1 km)
All tracks follow the picturesque shores of the Derwent River with the surfaces varying between wide concreted to narrower gravel sections.  It is a dog-on-lead path with plenty of playgrounds, beaches and of course the all important coffee and food stops along the way. Shaded areas with picnic tables and toilet facilities can be found at multiple points. For more information, head here.

2. Hobart Rivulet Track

Stretching over 2.6km, the Hobart Rivulet Track is another walking trail with multiple entry and exit points. Starting close to the city in Molle St, the track continues upstream to the foot of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington. Alternative starting points in South Hobart include Gore St, Wynyard St and Angelsea St near South Hobart Primary school. The playground in the Cascade Gardens is the perfect place to stop for a rest with BBQ/picnic facilities and toilets on site. The Rivulet Cafe off Angelsea St is a great spot for a food and coffee stop with plenty of kid friendly options and a playground onsite. Well suited for dogs on lead, the shady Rivulet track is a peaceful walk away from the bustle of the city. Something to keep in mind if you have little ones on scooters or bikes is the very slight uphill grade and gravel surface. For more information, click here.

3. The Sandy Bay Foreshore

Hobart parents are no doubt already familiar with this very popular beach and playground destination. The smooth surfaced 1.6km foreshore path is well suited to prams, scooters and of course our fur babies – provided they remain on a lead. Starting at Seagrass Long Point Cafe the path continues out around Blinking Billy point provided your little people let you go any further than the playground! For that reason, you might consider parking further along Sandy Bay road and starting your walk from the entry point at Blinking Billy Point. More food and coffee options including takeaway sandwiches, fish and chips and ice cream can be found in and around the Beach Road car park area with plenty of grassy spots, benches and tables for picnics. If you feel like a longer walk, start closer to the Sandy Bay village. It is approximately 2.1 km from Wrest Point Casino to Long Point beach via Sandy Bay Road. Break it up (or cut it short depending on how everyone is travelling) with a coffee stop at Little Miss Espresso on the corner of Sandy Bay Road and Manning Avenue.

4. Cornelian Bay to Royal Botanical Gardens

This 2.6km track has great start and finish points at either end with plenty to do and see in both locations. The track between Cornelian Bay and the Botanical Gardens utilises part of the Inter-City cycleway and is well suited to prams, scooters and bikes. This track can get busy at times and in the interest of safety it is important to keep to the correct side of the white line at all times depending on the direction you are headed. Dogs are not permitted on the cycleway at all. There are plenty of picnic spots with food and coffee options at both the Royal Botanical Gardens and at the Cornelian Bay Boathouse Restaurant and Kiosk right next to the playground. For more information, head here.

5. GASP! Elwick Bay, Glenorchy

GASP (Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park) walking trail is a flat, 3.1km track that follows the water's edge from Wilkinsons Point to Berriedale Bay. If you are looking for a shorter option though, the Derwent Entertainment Centre is a great place to start making your way along to the playground and picnic area at The Montrose Bay Community Park (approx 2.5km). Find out more here. And I thought I would add just one more bonus walk...

6. Kingston Beach

The popular family friendly beach is located approximately 15 minutes south of the Hobart CBD. There is a designated off-lead dog exercise area at the northern end across Browns River, however dogs are also permitted on lead along the esplanade. The smooth and recently upgraded pathway allows for a leisurely pram walk stretching the length of the beach with a number of good food and coffee options. A highlight for your little ones will be the swings and climbing frame perched on the beach itself making it the perfect spot for a little halfway break. Of a similar nature, just a little further south is the Ocean Esplanade in Blackmans Bay. Wherever you find yourself in the greater Hobart area or if you are just looking for a change of scene for your next pram walk, head here for more options!
